The Do’s and Don’ts of Laptops

  1. Do read and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on battery use.  One of the best features of laptops is the portability.  This feature is greatly reduced if your battery is constantly going dead.  You are limited to use only if an electric outlet is available.
  2. Do use anti-virus and firewall.  Protect yourself from thieves that will steal your information.  When in a public place it is possible for others to “see” your computer and even access the information if you aren’t protected.
  3. Do set up your user password.  If your computer is stolen this will make it a little tougher to access your information.  You should also set your screen saver to kick in after a short time and require your password to log back in.  This will keep prying eyes away if you walk away for a couple of minutes.
  4. Don’t use your laptop on soft surfaces.  Any type of fabric will give off lint that can get inside your computer and cause excess heat which can damage your computer.  I recommend using a cooling stand for actual lap use.  This will keep your legs from getting hot and protect your computer from the deadly lint.
  5. Don’t carry your laptop around without a case.  If your laptop is dropped from even a few feet it might be ruined.  A good padded case will protect your laptop in case it is dropped.
  6. Do keep drinks away from your computer.   A drink spilled on the keyboard can destroy your laptop.  Even if it still works all of your keys will stick.
  7. Do Use a soft cloth to clean the screen.  Using tissue paper or a paper towel could scratch the screen.  Also, if you use a mild liquid shut off the computer before spraying it on the screen.

By following these simple rules you will get more mileage out of your laptop computer.  If you have any questions about these or need help setting them up, please CALL US and we will help.
